Mentor Notes
Brisbane Seniors OnLine Association Inc. is a volunteer organisation which provides the over 50s with basic computer, email and internet skills.Brisbane has been divided into a number of areas called hubs, with each having its own coordinator. The Hub Coordinator is responsible for the mentors and learners within that hub, matching mentors with learners, developing group training sessions and all other activities relating to the hub.
Mentors are required only to teach learners the functions set out in the BSOL Basic Curriculum:
Module 1 Computer Basicsor those parts of the curriculum that the learner wishes to learn.
Module 2 Introduction to Operating System
Module 3 System Security
Module 4 Basic Word Processing
Module 5 More About the Operating System
Module 6 The Internet
Module 7 Email
There may be other computer-related topics which a learner may ask you to cover. Depending on your own knowledge and your assessment of the learner's ability, you may be able to cover some additional topics. Please check first with your hub coordinator to make sure that there isn't a long waiting list of new learners waiting to start their lessons.
A more detailed version of the curriculum can be viewed on our web site.
We recognise that each mentor will have differing levels of computer knowledge and their own way of tutoring, which may affect the scope and order of such training. The learning period will continue until such time that, in your opinion, the curriculum has been covered and the learner has had sufficient revision. At that time you may advise that the training will end and notify your Hub Coordinator so that you may commence training a new learner.
From time to time BSOL organises training programs for mentors, and whilst we encourage mentors to attend, you are not required to do so - the choice is yours. As a minimum though, we strongly recommend you attend the introductory session for new mentors. We run these 2-3 times a year.
